Carol R Harlan
May 9, 1932 - October 18, 2010
CSA Founder, Medic, and Camp Mom, Carol Harlan, passed away Monday morning, October 18th, 2010, at her home after a battle with cancer.
Those who were blessed to know Carol appreciate what a wonderful person she was and are part of a special community whose lives she touched, shaped and influenced. She was a role model for numerous people and a second mom to her adopted family at Camp Saint Andrews.
Carol tied countless scarves throughout her years of service to CSA, and was the ideal example and inspiration for so many red, purple and white scarfers. She was a true representative of sacrificing time, talent, and personal will; high and noble living; and dedicating one’s life to Christian service.
Preceded in death by her husband, Harry, with whom she was married for 50 years, Carol is survived by her loving sisters, Barbara Wilson and Jeanne Ballard, devoted children Vicki and her husband Errol, Cindy, Penny her husband Darren, Hal, John and his wife Melissa, and grandchildren Matthew, Rachel, Carolyn, Lynn, Daniel, Nicholas, Lori, Marcus, and Tom.
Carol touched an immeasurable number of lives through her active and passionate involvement in numerous school, work and volunteer organizations, including Lincoln High School, Girl Scouts, Kaiser Permanente (RN), Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Cursillo and Saint Andrew’s Preschool, in addition to Camp Saint Andrews.
The world has lost a wonderful woman, but her legacy lives on in hundreds of adults and children whose lives she has touched. Carol will be deeply missed and her legacy will remain in our hearts and minds for generations to come.
“May the road rise to meet you and the wind be at your back and the Lord hold you always in the hollow of His hand.”

Harry Ramon Harlan Jr.
May 22, 1931 - November 12, 2003
Harold Ramon Harlan Jr. was born on May 22, 1931. He was a life-long resident of the San Francisco Bay Area. Looking for sunshine, and following his brother John, he lived in San Bruno for the past 42 years. He married Carol in 1953 and during there 50 years of marriage, they celebrated the births of their children, Vicki, Cindy, Penny, Hal and John. They also celebrated the births of grandchildren; Yvonne, Matthew, Rachel, Carolyn, Lynn, Daniel, Nicholas, Lori, Marcus, Tommy and great-grandchild, Kayley.
He joined his father's business, Harlan Associates, Inc. in 1955, as an analytical chemist. Each of his daughters took a turn at running the office and reception area. His son Hal followed in his footsteps. Harry's dedication to the business inspired Hal and Penny to take over as partners in 1997 when he retired.
During the 1970's he became an active member in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, serving as an Usher and participating in the youth snow trips. One of the founding members of Camp Saint Andrews, he helped administer and attended Camp St. Andrews for over 25 years. Many a camper earned their certificate in the Jr. Olympic Archery Development program under his guidance.
A dedicated and supportive father, he became a Mason in 1990, while his son John was Master at Blue Lakes Lodge No. 714 F&AM in San Bruno. Harry was elected to the line when Blue Lakes merged with Burlingame Lodge No. 400, and was installed as Master in 1998. Though his many interests kept him close to home, he found his best self when traveling with Carol, whether touring the US via camper or explorer, cruising to Mexico, or roaming about Europe and Australia. They spent many weekends at their second home in Inverness, California, creating precious memories not only for themselves but for their grandchildren as well.
Committed to leadership, development and youth, his love, energy and especially his quick wit were always evident in everything he did and he will be dearly missed. |

Mitch Edward Hodgson
August 27, 1982 - January 14, 2007
Mitch was born in Martinez, CA. 8 weeks premature. He reached the highest rank in Cub Scouts, Arrow of Light with religious knot (the only Cub pins that can be worn on a Boy Scout uniform), and as a Boy Scout he again attained the highest rank, Eagle, which only 1 out of 100 scouts reach.
In school he played clarinet for years, but also played the saxophone, trumpet, drums, piano, spoons, jaws harp, guitar and a didgeridoo (which he made himself). Mitch could tame horses that no one else could and held several records in track and cross country. He was elected Homecoming King by the entire student body of Alhambra High School prior to his graduation in 2001.
Mitch graduated with honors from Humboldt State University in 2005 with a BA in Recreational Management and minors in Scientific Diving and Business. Mitch also received a Dive Master Certificate and was a Certified Rescue Diver. In his spare time he would climb to the top of 300' redwood trees, dive, surf, fish, ski, snowboard and climb mountains. After graduation, he completed his college requirements with an internship in Alaska for the summer where he worked as a snorkel tour guide.
He married Heather Jones, his college sweetheart and love of his life, November 26, 2006 and they resided in Keaau, Hawaii were he was working for a spear fishing shop. Mitch wanted to get to the top of every mountain he saw, so he and Heather agreed to use the name Summit for their first child, boy or girl. Summit Kaleilehua Hodgson arrived 5 weeks early on January 4, 2007.
On Sunday, January 14, 2007 he and a friend were swimming out to a reef off the Puna Coast of Hawaii (Kehena Beach) when Mitch suddenly disappeared. Extensive searches were conducted, but only his spear gun was found washed up on a beach 67 miles south of Kehena. After 13 days the searches were called off. |

Bill was born in St. Louis, MO. in 1942. A resident of the Show Me State until he joined the Navy. After 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, he became a resident of California, where he met his wife of 25 years, Mary. A long time employee of Greyhound Lines, he got to travel through most of the state and beyond. He also dabbled as a printer machinist and in electronic repairs. At the time of his passing, he was enjoying security work with Pinkerton Security.
Becoming a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in the early 80's, he almost immediately became involved with camp. He became Camp Director in 1986, and while he only filled the role for 1 year, Bill remained active with camp as part of the staff, mainly devoting his time to the photography program, where he encouraged campers to take photos around camp and then develop their own black and white pictures.
His enthusiasm for camp and his passion in life made it clear that he danced through life and is missed dearly.
