Thoughts about your Green Scarf

Welcome back to the Scarf Program. Remember, this program is meant to challenge you to accept responsibility in different areas of your life, according to your age and/or grade. All members of the Scarf Society progress through the colors by thoughtfully and prayerfully choosing to accept the challenge for which they are ready.

Requirements for the Green Scarf:
You may choose to accept the challenge of the Green Scarf if you are entering 8th grade, or are 13 years old before December 1st.

The challenge of the Green Scarf:
is to rededicate yourself to the Christian way of life.

If you received a Gray Scarf, you accepted the challenge to be a good citizen and a helpful camper. If you received one shield, you added the challenge of being a true friend. If you received two shields, you added the challenge of being a good example to others. If you received three shields, you accepted the challenge to accept some responsibility to be a leader. If you received four shields, you were introduced to Jesus’ summary of the law: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. When you received the Blue Scarf, you accepted the challenge to be loyal to God, oneself, and others.

As you prepare to accept the challenge of the Green Scarf we would like you to think about the following:

1) Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians says, “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? … God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.” (3:16) Think about what it might mean to you to really believe that God believes you are holy. Choose one thing you can do at camp to take care of your body as God’s temple.

2) God has given each of us the ability to think, to understand and to make decisions for the right or for the wrong. Choose one thing you can do at camp to take care of your mind and expand your ability to choose the right.

3) When Jesus was asked what is the most important law, he answered: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. The second commandment is like unto it; you shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” When you love God fully, we must love all others that God has made. What can you do at camp to demonstrate your love and respect for others?

4) What gets in the way of loving God with all your heart and soul and strength? What can you do at camp to learn to love God and understand God’s love for you?

5) What has made it hard to keep the Scarf challenges you have accepted in the past? What can you do to help yourself live the challenge of the Green Scarf?

Make some notes below for your discussion at the scheduled Green Scarf Discussion meeting. You might want to spend some time in quiet reflection and prayer.
